Steps to Relink Tables

If you have previously “split the database” and but the back end database on a local area network file server, as recommended for multi-user situations, and you now need to move where that back end database is located, then you will need to “relink” the tables in the front end database to the new location of the back end database. Here are the steps to do that.

(1) If Client Service Tracker is open, then close it.

(2) Hold down on the “Shift” key on your keyboard, and open Client Service Tracker. Keep holding it down until Client Service Tracker is open, then let up on the “Shift” key. You will see Client Service Tracker in database design view.

(3) On any of the tables in the left-hand column, right click with your mouse. On the pop-up menu, click on Linked Table Manager.

(4) You may see a Microsoft Access Security Notice, telling you that what you are about to open may be unsafe. (Since it is Microsoft itself that is providing the Linked Table Manager to you, this makes no sense.) Click the “Open” button.

(5) You will see the Linked Table Manager, and it will list all the linked tables in Client Service Tracker. First click the “Select All” button, then put a check in the “Always prompt for new location” checkbox, then click the “OK” button.

(6) A dialog box will open titled “Select New Location of Application Settings.” (It may say “Select New Location of” some other data table. It doesn’t matter.) Now navigate to where the back end database has been moved to. Click on the appropriate back end database. The name will appear in the “File Name” box at the bottom. The click the “OK” button.

(7) The linked table process will probably automatically happen for all the remaining tables automatically. Or you might have to repeat step (6), above, for each table. When all the linking is completed, you will get a message box telling you so, as shown below. Click the “OK” button of the message, then click the “Close” button of the Linked Table Manager.

You have now completed relinking the tables in this front end to the new location of the tables in the back end.

Just as was done when the database was originally split, you will now need to copy and paste the front end “CST Application” database to all the computers that use Client Service Tracker.
